Rat Terriers - Information - Why Breed

Rat Terriers are working dogs that are bred with the emphasis on their working abilities. They are generally robust and do not have too many genetically transformed diseases. The main objective when breeding Rat Terriers is their personality. All puppies (the average litter size is about 5-7 puppies) should be well balanced and socialized. To be successful, a breeder should consider all the aspects of Rat Terrier breeding and follow the recommendations of breed clubs and associations.

The Rat Terrier Club of America sticks strongly to the issue of responsible breeding. It is acknowledged that any Rat Terrier breeding should be well planned. Not any registered Rat Terrier is considered good for being used in a breeding program. The breeding stock should be evaluated to choose the best dogs for producing sound Rat Terriers capable of performing in conformation, displaying good personality traits, and showing perfect hunting skills. Puppies that do not meet these requirements should be sold with a spay-neuter contract. This excludes them from further breeding and improves the breed.

Rat Terriers - Information - Official Breed Registries

The Rat Terrier is not an AKC (American Kennel Club) breed. This all-breed registry did not follow the example of the UKC (Universal Kennel club), the first and the largest organization to register the Rat Terrier. Since the first registration, in 1999, the number of Rat Terriers increased. Nowadays, the UKC appears to be registering about 90% of all Rat Terriers throughout the world. The breed has also been accepted by the ARF (Animal Research Foundation), and the CKC (Continental Kennel Club).

Overall, there are about 10 organizations that register the Rat Terrier. By registering their Rat Terriers with this or that organization, breeders agree to follow all the regulations and code of ethics adhered to by the registry. With this in mind, special attention should be devoted to the choice of a registry.

Some registries have set a number of restrictions that do not allow breeders to register their dogs. Thus, the American Hunting Dog Association does not register non-purebred Rat Terriers. The NRTR (National Rat Terrier Registry) will not accept Rat Terrier hybrids. Such registries make it evident that this policy helps to improve the Rat Terrier breed.

On the contrary, some registries are rather democratic on the point. Hence, the UKC does register Rat Terrier hybrids. Its registration procedures also differ some from other breed registries.

To conclude, breeders should choose a registry that meets their needs and ensures the breed promotion. Registration will make it possible to better track the background of individual Rat Terriers and will be instrumental in designing a good breeding program.
